Thitruvathira Celebration

In Kerala thitruvathira is basically a women’s festival. Even though thiruvathira is celebrated by the majority of Hindu communities in Kerala, it is really a Nair women’s festival. It is a day of fasting for women and they do not consume any items of food containing rice on the day. The women get up early in the morning and take a bath every day for seven days starting from alterism aswaty. While taking a bath the women will sing songs mostly to God of love, accompanied by musical sounds produced by splashing of their fists in the water. This is called Thayirkalakkal

In Kerala one of the most popular parts of this festival is the thiruvathirakali or the kaikkottikali The women stand in a circle around a lighted brass lamp and dance each step to rhytm of songs sung by them keeping in tune by clapping their hands. In Kerala Ambalavasis and Nairs who have close association with the namboodiris have a custom called paathirapoochoodal which means wearing flowers at night.
